I'm very new to using DotNetNuke and I have been trying to learn to manage my own site instead of paying someone to do it. The problem is that now I can't access DotNetNuke and my site isn't published anymore and I don't know what to do. When I try to access the DotNetNuke back-end I see this error message:

Server Error in '/dotnetnuke' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/> </system.web> </configuration>

I don't know why this message would be here, because I didn't change anything. I'm still new to this, but I would appreciate any help I can get.

you'll have to make the edit in your web.config file that it suggests e.g. set mode="Off" in the customErrors node. BTW when this type of thing happens out of the blue it's often not related to the site but the services e.g. a corrupted application pool or on offline database (or you've ran out of space on the database)

So if I edit the web.config then the site should go active correct? I'm really still very new to all of this, but is there a way for this not to happen again?

if you make that change then you'll be able to see what the error is i.e. asp.net will show a full stack trace. At that point if you post back here we can help you diagnose the issue.

I made the changes you suggested and now when I try to go into DotNetNuke, it says the site is unavailable and under construction; I can't log in either. What do I do know to track down the error? I really can't tell you have grateful I am for help with this. I'm learning A LOT about how to do something I really knew little about before.
