It really depends on what your final goal is.
First, Determine what functionality you need / want / envision is.
Then look to see if any of the pre-built platforms can fill those needs.
Also, look to see if you can build it from scratch in a reasonable amount of time.
I include the last bit because sometimes the "free / already built" platforms are overkill. You might be able to get away with minimal functionality that just works instead of relying on the work of someone else. (especially if there is an issue that needs fixing)

Joomla is a great CMS.....however it is also PHP. If you review a web servers log for a week you would see 'hundreds' of hack attempts towards PHP. It's rare to find generic .net hacks.

We are visiting here for a similar reason, a new CMS platform. One that is not PHP.
