I want to create a very basic dnn site - two editable nav lists and a content pane. I want every page in the site to be based on the same template. I'm afraid that I don't have a good grasp of the DNN layout, however.

Our web design is done in Artisteer and exported (without content) to DNN. The export produces page, block, article, and edit ASCX pages. Do we really need all of those? Would page and edit be sufficient if all pages are going to basically be blocks on text? A Menu-menudef.xml file is created in a Menu folder, but it doesn't contain any of the menu links we've defined in artisteer. Does this mean we've done the menu(s) incorrectly?

Is there a book or tutorial that covers all of this?

Thanks for the help!

Hello,

There are many articles online that explain this stuff... but here's a quick version:

First, you need a "Skin" (google DNN skinning). The skin defines the design and layout of your page - but, it generally shouldn't have any content.

Your skin will have "Panes" in it that tell DNN where it can put things.

In DNN, you'll tell your site to use your skin, and then it will look right, but not have any content.

Next, you'll place "Modules" (which are like little apps) into the page. You will be able to place the modules in any spot where, in your skin, you put a "Pane".

The modules each do different things - but there's a links one that helps to create simple lists of links, and there's an HTML one that does basic text. Beyond that, the rest is just figuring out what you want the site to do, and what modules best accomplish that.

Hi

For Skinning you can also go through below link:

Mark,
The menu items will be added when you create the Pages within DNN. It adds those automatically.
The items on the menus (vertical and horizontal) will be the same. The menu components generated by Artisteer don't allow for different items on the different menus.
It sounds like you're trying to use Artisteer to create the CONTENT for your DNN site, which isn't how it works.

We originally were using Artisteer to create pages that represented the layouts required for the various types of content we needed, but those pages ended up being linked as menu items after the import. I guess I was expecting an XML to dictate the contents of the menu, but that doesn't appear to be how it works. We have a large number of pages that are little more than scientific data. Will I have to go through every page and exclude it from the menu?

I'm getting the impression that it would be easier (from a customization standpoint) to create the skin using plain HTML etc and import it into DNN, skipping Artisteer altogether.
