Regarding this...

"maybe you should use default version of the config file"

....where would I find that default version?

And, does getting the default version really matter now, given that removing the culprit node (as noted above) made the error go away?

What do you think?

Please advise.

default version of the file should be located in /config folder of the DNN install package.

Ah ha, yes I see the file "DotNetNuke.log4net.config" and, AFAICT, the version that was there when I took over the site did have the locationInfo node it in.

And, from my research, the log4net forum suggested that the locationInfo node can be removed entirely to avoid the error in question.

So, I guess I am all set now.
