I've never heard of google automatically looking for sitemap.xml either. But it would be easy to check- Just drop a sitemap.xml file in the root, and then check the logs periodically to see if the googlebot pulled it. Would be an interesting experiment.

Just to clear this up ...

robots.txt is the file that google and pretty much all other search crawlers look at automatically.  

Depending on what is declared in this file these crawlers may look for sitemap.xml  or sitemap.aspx or sitemap.txt
or sitemap.php
