I didnt work on that area, so it looks like they tweaked how it was done to allow the user to set the scoping level via the module settings - if you do not set one then it works across all the site users

Thanks. That sounds about right. If I click Manage -> Settings ... Are the only 3 tabs that are displayed Module Settings, Permissions, Page Settings? There doesn't seem to be anywhere to change the scoping levels here.

sorry (again) - i wasn't clear - the scoping is for the member directory

I agree..this does seem to be a security issue. There doesn't appear to be any way to control the level of access to the autocomplete. Using enough characters you can find anyone.
