The error was either related to a user issue with sql server or was not the most recent version of the events module... Not very helpful I know.
Our sql server was on a separate box from iis... we pointed dns to the sql box and installed dnn there.  This was a hack to the real "user" issue.  My programmer said that it is a common issue and is easily solved but we never really solved it.

this pointed me into the right direction, in fact I had one connection string (the legacy "appsettings" one) pointing to a wrong location (typo).. oh dear.
