Sebastian's idea works.

The one change I do is manually applying the 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 scripts and then updating dnn_Versions myself.  I also have a listed out program that I follow but the important thing is, 5.4.1 direct from 4.9.5 works.

Upgrading from 5.2.2 to 5.4.1 worked without any problems UNTIL I started the portal back up. Application fails to start, pointing to some coding errors in "\App_Code\XML\Handlers\download.vb" file... -- it says some handlers are no longer supported. I had to roll back to 5.2.2.

If you don't use the XML module delete it before upgrading. If you use it, go into the download.vb file that is shown in the error and fully qualify the problem lines to use System.Web.xxxxx where xxxx is the class that holds the method that causes the error. Do this before upgrading.

I rolled back the VM, copied a Default.page.template from the default folder and re-ran the upgrade. The error message in the log is gone but it still fails with the following:

00:00:04.984 -   Executing Application Upgrades: 05.03.00 Error!
00:00:06.609 -   Installing Package File HTML_Community_05.02.00_Install:  Error!
00:00:07.015 -   Installing Package File Messaging_01.01.00_Install:  Error!
00:00:07.078 -   Installing Package File Taxonomy_01.01.00_Install:  Error!

Is there a way to get more diagnostics about these as the event log isn't showing anything and "Error!" doesn't give one much to go on.

Also, you say this error is reported in DNN-12154 - is this for all the above errors or just the default page missing? I notice in this issue log it mentions something about default language. This DNN site was built a while back and I'm not a DNN expert (even less so when it was installed) but I'm sure I remember something about installing the right language pack so I did that.

Cheers,Rob.

Check the Event log, and see if there's a General Exception thwith an Object reference not set to an instance of an object error.

I just looked at the upgrade code for 530 and after checking for a Default.Page.template, the code looks for a UserProfile.page.template file. In my case it is missing when going from 494 to 541. It must be created in a version in between, but I don't know which one (yet).

Upgrading the XML module before the upgrade fixed this particular error for me. From reading this thread, there are three problems in here:

1. Couple of references in download.vb that aren't fully qualified for which the fix is to upgrade the XML module first
2. Problems in the upgrade script at 5.3.0
3. Errors reported with installing three modules

From what I'm reading, 2 & 3 maybe the same error and something to do with the languages installed.

Cheers, Rob.
