I am having the exact problem, but the database has the correct version number. I have now done this twice, it says succesful but I don't have the ribbon at the top of the control panel and it keeps saying there is an update.

For some reason, the upgrade status report is not showing the execution of the 05.04.02.SqlDataProvider script which should occur before "Upgrading to Version: 05.04.02". This indicates it is highly unlikely the the database upgrades for version 05.04.02 were run. Adding a row to the Version table for version 05.04.02 would stop the endless cycle of upgrade attempts but keep in mind that without the upgrade of the database to the same version as the assembly the installation is "unstable" and there may be a number of issues - either evident now or later upon future upgrades.

Please check the site's folder \Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider for the existance of one or both of the following two files and report back with your findings:

05.04.02.SqlDataProvider
05.04.02.log

Is it possible that the 05.04.02.SqlDataProvider file did not get extracted properly from the .zip package or was not copied/uploaded to the site?

As long as your site is functioning properly, I think you may be OK. The new ribbon bar control panel is not automatically selected as the default control panel during an upgrade and can be selected under Host --> Host Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Other Settings --> Control Panel.

The Update Available prompt at the top of the Control Panel is, I believe, showing because DotNetNuke 05.04.03 was released a few days ago. However, it was pulled from distribution today and will be replaced by version 05.04.04 in a few days time.

Looks like the Providers folder was missing in its entirety from my extracted upgrade files, and therefore neither of those two files got uploaded.  I will delete my manual db entry, upload the missing files, and let it upgrade naturally.

1. Before extracting the .zip upgrade package, always right click on the .zip folder, select "Properties" and then click "Unblock" button if there is one. This is a relatively new Windows security feature pertaining to downloaded .zip archives. Not sure if missing that step would prevent extraction of the Providers folder but this step is a must for proper extraction of many types of files.

2. If you have a good backup of your site's file system AND database done prior to the upgrade attempt I would highly recommend restoring the site file and database from the backups before re-attempting the upgrade. It appears that some of the upgrade code did run leaving your site in an "intermediate" and possibly unstable state.
