I upgraded one site successfully - the second site gave an error before the upgrade started ie an asp.net error - I have no idea what to look for (site restored to 5.2.3). Vague definition but can any one help?

Without any indication of the error message, it's difficult to help. I would, however, double check:

1. That there is not a problem with the database connection string information and
2. That full permissions have been granted to the ASP.Net worker process user account on the site root folder and all child folders. What is the operating system and in particular what version of Internet Information Services (IIS) is being used for the site which failed on upgrade?

It was the standard custom errors turned of so you can't see the error

IIS 7 - it worked fine when I restored from backup - would't that mean the connection strings are OK?

The connection strings are probably fine unless they (or the web.config file itself) got overwritten when overwriting site files to prepare for the upgrade. Are you using the upgrade package and not the install package when performing the upgrade?

Have you checked that Network Service account has been granted full permission on site root and child folders?

If you have the DotNetNuke XML module installed, you will need to either uninstall it or upgrade the XML module to v 5.3.5 prior to upgrading DotNetNuke to 5.3.0 and above. Likewise for the DotNetNuke Chat module except that there is no upgrade available for that module yet. As it is incompatible with DotNetNuke 5.4.x anyway you will need to uninstall Chat prior to the upgrade.

If you will be running the site under an ASP.Net 4.0 application pool, DotNetNuke Gallery will need to be upgraded to v 4.3.1 RC prior to upgrading DotNetNuke.

Other than the above, my only other recommendation would be to retry the upgrade (after making sure you have backups of filesystem and database) but before doing so, change customErrors="Off" in the web.config so that you will be able to see the underlying error. You might also want to move the site backups to a localhost installation and do a test upgrade first so as to not take down the production site should the upgrade again fail.

Many thanks I will look at some of your suggestions particularly the XML - it is on the same ISP as my successful installation (asp.net 3.5)
