Can anybody help me dig myself out of this hole, and perhaps suggest an alternative DNN web host that provides excellent customer service?

I'm not afiliated, but I see in the sponsor section of this page solutions starting at 5.95/mo. As sponsors, I would expect them to be sensitive about the issues of DNN users. Just ask the right questions before you signup. These are hosting providers that have their own DNN experts on board, I guess they would be able to assist you through your upgrades. The backup issue is certainly ont to check out. At question is: how easy or difficult is it to get a recent version of the portal running on (localhost)

You will realize by now that there is real value to your database, your database is a capital investment you need to protect. A good hosting provider must understand that and let you keep the ultimate control over your data.

Hello Steve,

I know its almost impossible to recover a broken DNN site like yours, without a backup, but if you provide us the file system and database, (which ever you have) we will do our best to recover your website.

Feel free to email me for any question.

Thanks to all for the offer of assistance.

I have parted company with my web hosts and have decided to rebuild the site (which we had always intended to do, granted not in this way). I think due to the fact I've had 4 good years with DotNetNuke we are going to stick with it.

What I need to do now is find a good hosting company that is praised for customer support, ideally one that you can telephone when your in dire straits. As I've never picked a hosting company before (not even the one I've parted company with) I would be interested in hearing suggestions.

We are a sporting club so don't attract much traffic, but I would say that customer service comes at a higher priority than cost of service for us. If DNN administrators have any recommendations or feedback I would be interested in hearing from you.

And the offer to try and fix the site from Rashid KAZI of DNN4Less was most kind. That's the kind of service I wish I had. I will look at DNN4Less to see if it meets our committees needs, thank you.

Steve . . .

I'm sorry to hear that you will have to completely re-build the website but that approach will most likely be the best in the long run.

I placed a new client's DNN site on DNN4Less shared hosting (Silver plan) last fall and have been very pleased with both their performance and support. In late December I purchased their Reseller hosting plan (RS75) and have started migrating existing DNN sites from several other hosting providers. They were happy to move my already hosted site at DNN4Less into the reseller plan and give me a pro-rata credit for the unused portion of the shared hosting plan. When migrating a site from another host all you have to do is obtain backups of the filesystem and database from the previous host and place the backups (via ftp) into a folder of the new DNN4Less account. Their support will take it from there restoring the files and database and making the necessary connection string changes in web.config. The only issues that I've found so far are:

1) you must request support to set filesystem permissions for the ASP.Net worker process account on the root folder of the DNN install as any change to the website configuration (such as adding an FTP user) will reset permissions on the root folder. That is not a DNN4Less problem but rather a problem for any hosting provider using Plesk for its hosting control panel.

2) they restrict remote access to the database (via SQL Server Management Studio, etc.) by remote IP address. Once you provide support with the IP address that you will be using when connecting remotely to the database and as long as that address doesn't change, all will be well. If it does change, a call or email to support should take promptly restore access. A good security measure, I'm sure but a bit of a pain.

In one support case I had neglected to let DNN4Less support know that a fix they had made for me had resolved the problem. I received an email the next day following up and asking if the problem was resolved or if I needed further assistance.

Hi Steve, I'm sorry I missed this forum post earlier. If you can email me at Lee@DNNCreative.com I would be happy to work with you regarding a DNN site recovery. Many times when a DNN site errors out on upgrade it isn't too hard to fix the problem, but, that depends on why it stopped working. Also, you may consider taking a look at the tutorials that we have on our website if you plan on doing them yourself. Upgrades can be quite challenging if you need to do them remotely. Cheers, Lee
