That error could be caused by a few things - but most likely (as its ok in Edit and Layout but not in View) its an issue with the Modulecachingprovider configuration for the module.

Try modifying the module caching provider setting for the module (in module settings) - switch to Memory from File for example.

OK. I downloaded the DNN 5.6.3 source code and, if my code editor can be trusted, ModuleHost.vb FileLineNumber: 441 is:

Dim cacheKey As String = cache.GenerateCacheKey(_ModuleConfiguration.TabModuleID, varyBy)

So this got me to looking at things cache-related. In Host > Host Settings, I scrolled down to Advanced Settings > Performance Settings and noticed that "Module Cache Provider" is BLANK and there are no entries in the dropdown list. In another working 5.6.3 installation I have, I see entries such as "File" and "Memory".

So it seems that the installation doesn't appear to know about these providers. Any ideas about how to get these recognized?

It appears my web.config file is missing the following block in the <dotnetnuke>...</dotnetnuke> section:

<moduleCaching defaultProvider="FileModuleCachingProvider">
      <providers>
        <clear />
        <add name="FileModuleCachingProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Services.ModuleCache.FileProvider, DotNetNuke.Provider.ModuleCaching.FileProvider" providerPath="~\Providers\ModuleCachingProviders\FileModuleCachingProvider\" />
        <add name="MemoryModuleCachingProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Services.ModuleCache.MemoryProvider, DotNetNuke.Provider.ModuleCaching.MemoryProvider" providerPath="~\Providers\ModuleCachingProviders\MemoryModuleCachingProvider\" />
      </providers>
    </moduleCaching>
    <outputCaching defaultProvider="FileOutputCachingProvider">
      <providers>
        <clear />
      </providers>
    </outputCaching>
    <sitemap defaultProvider="coreSitemapProvider">
      <providers>
        <clear />
        <add name="coreSitemapProvider" type="DotNetNuke.SitemapProviders.CoreSitemapProvider, DotNetNuke.SitemapProviders.CoreSitemapProvider" providerPath="~\Providers\MembershipProviders\Sitemap\CoreSitemapProvider\" />
      </providers>
    </sitemap>

However, I can't just add this block to my web.config file because the referenced files are also missing. I will try copying those across from a "good" DNN 5.6.3 installation and see how that works.

PowerDNN did the grunt work for me. Anthony Gies of PowerDNN wrote to me:

You are correct that pieces of the web.config were missing and this was causing the caching providers to not install. This is a common problem with 4.x to 5.x upgrades. I have copied in the necessary configuration blocks manually and re-rolled the failed portion of the upgrade and everything should now be functioning normally.

Things are working fine now.

Onward!
