Hi All,

I built my organization (non profit) web site almost 5 years ago using dnn 4.05 and never had an issue. Recently the site has been hacked and i asked the host to restore, but it happens every day now and I have to restore. I have no choice but to upgrade, now my question should I upgrade to 4.6 then 4.9 then 5 and so on? if so what is the best way to do that? the skin I am using is modified from the original dnn blue skin, I can copy that file, right? or should I get  new install for DNN 6 and buy another database and start from scratch? could I use the same database info? the site has almost 137  pages and tons of info, files and such. Please provide the best way to deal with this issue, also how can I find which file has been installed on the site to make it not work, the home page open but every link takes you to the same Ad page, how can I find that page to delete it.

the web site is:

www.cmhagrb.on.ca

Thank you in advance.

you should upgrade to 4.6.2, 4.8 and 4.9.5 at least, 5.2.3, 5.5.1 and 5.6.7 to finally 6.1.5, to get the latest version. Be aware, DNN 5.3 and abover require .Net 3.5 SP1 and SQL Server 2005 or above. Always start with a backup and I would install a cloned site locally or on the server to perform the upgrade w/o pressure.

Thank you so much. The hosting company is only offering DNN 5.2, is it secure enough? Should I do a fresh instill to a different folder on the server and get another SQL database and rebuild the site, or clone the old site and try to upgrade from inside the site using the upgrade option inside host menu? Would the old database work with the new dnn 5.2 (it was linked to dnn 4.05)?

If I go with a fresh installation, could I link the old database to it, or it would not work the the new DNN?

Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to see what is the best option without having to spend a lot time rebuilding. Could you please walk me through the steps of the best way of doing the upgrade.

Thanks

if you want to stick to your current content, upgrading should be the best way for you. The upgrade witll upgrade the database as well - and if your hosting company installed .Net 3.5 SP 1 and/or .Net 4,0, you should be able upgrading to lastest version. Make sure to upgrade installed modules before an upgrade and always start with a backup of the files and the database.

Can I upgrade using the option under the host account and still choose which DNN Ver to upgrade to, or would it force me to do DNN 6? My hosting company doesn't have .net 3.5 so I will have to stay with dnn 5.2. Is that ver secure enough?
