I would like to install the latest version of DNN on a Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition. What prerquisites should I insure before attempting the install? What steps should I follow ti install? I have been browsing various forums and websites and it seems that the compact edition of Microsoft SQL will not support stored procedures so it is out. When I tired to install MS SQL Express 2012 it told me that it required a service pack upgrade to the Windows 2008 R2 server. I cannot find an upgrade... I could sure use some help!

Bruce,

there are several requirements for installing SQL Server 2012, see here. Before you are looking into every detail, I would suggest to install all the patches from Windows update. On the other hand, as far as I remember, the installation procedure of SQL Server gives you an exact link to the required update, or at least a knowledge base id (KB-xxxxxx) that you can use to search on MS Technet.

Best wishes
Michael

I have checked the requirements and have everything installed as directed. The Windows Server 2008 R2 service pack 1 was installed by windows update and the .NET framework 3.5 and 4.0 are installed with requisite service packs. However, when I start the install of MS SQL Express 2012 I still get an error that the Windows Server 2008 R2 service pack 1 needs to installed even though the installation history reports that it has already been installed. I obviously am missing something...any ideas? Should I uninstall and reinstall service pack 1?

Bruce,

I had another issue with installing SQL Server 2012 (as well as SQL Server 2008 R2): As the language on my PC is set to de-AT (German-Austria), it did not work. Changing the language to de-DE (German-Germany) solved the problem. I could change it back after the installation without problems.

But anyway: SQL Server 2012 has no significant changes in the database engine, it's more on the Business Intelligence side (Reporting Services, Analysis Services etc.). Does the installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 work?

Best wishes
Michael

Thank you for your suggestions. I tried to install MS SQL Express 2008 and it installled without incident. Afterwards, Windows update pulled down Windows server 2008 R2 service pack 1 and reinstalled it??? I know it was installed previously ( at least the update history reported it was), but evidently the install of MS SQL triggered something that caused it to reinstall...anyway, I have not tried again to install MS SQL Express 2012, maybe tomorrow, but at least I have a database engine I can use now. One more thing - I followed the DNN install instructions and tried to get Version 7.2 running but ran into a little snag: I created the folder, copied the files and then went in to ISS 7.5 and created a website XXXXX and then an application XXXXX but when I tried to set the folder security rights Windows did not recognize the IISAPPPOOL\XXXXX user/process for me to create rights for. What am I doing wrong?
