I haven't done a DNN upgrade in a couple of years, but I have a detailed set of instructions that I developed locally, to remind myself not to skip steps.  I tried them today on my local test site, and the upgrade wizard doesn't run.  I just compared them to the upgrade instructions in the wiki (which didn't exist 3 years ago AFAIK) and there are some differences. I need to know how critical they are.

I've always restored my local test site from the latest backup of my production site (done), and then copied the upgrade over it, making the usual changes to web.config.  This is because the local test site is not critical.  I do unzip the upgrade files to a local folder and then copy them over the local site from there.  I do unblock the zip file first.  I didn't configure IIS for a new web site, or change any file permissions for a new site; my existing site should have the necessary file permissions.  I didn't create a new database name, I used the existing name and user.  When I browse to the site I see the current site, not upgraded.  When I change the URL to localhost/osc/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade I see a blank page and the wizard doesn't seem to be running.

Which of the steps I left out is blocking the upgrade?

Hedera,

Upgrading (at least such a minor upgrade) is more simple I think. I would copy the files from the installation somewhere (as a backup, eg. to a zip file) and backup the database. Then unblock the upgrade zip file and unzip it over the existing files, start the web site, enter your host name and password and let it run. That's all. If anything goes wrong, just restore the files and the database from the backup.

Best wishes
Michael

I completely agree that it's a great idea to test an upgrade in an offline copy. I'm surprised by "making the usual changes to web.config". IMO to do an upgrade does NOT usually require web.config changes. The upgrade zip files don't have a web.config.

What are your usual changes and why do you have to make them?

Thank you both for the responses.

To clarify the changes to the web.config:  my local copy of the site is created from a copy of the production site - I have to change the connection string to get it to work.  In this case I also had to change autoupgrade from TRUE to FALSE - because that was what the wiki instructions said to do.  Since the upgrade isn't working I wonder if that was really needed.

Unzipping the upgrade to a separate file and copying it over from there is also what the wiki said to do.  The wiki says specifically (as step 11, actually):

  1. Extract the contents of the UPGRADE package into a folder on your computer, it is not recommended that you extract directly over your website.

I have to admit I'm concerned about the possibility that Win7 copy here actually copied the entire folders from the upgrade instead of simply replacing all the files; but that may just be paranoia.

Michael Tobisch, can you explain this: start the web site, enter your host name and password and let it run.  I've never had to log into my sites as host to make an upgrade run, and this isn't in the upgrade instructions, which just say to browse to the site and then replace the URL with the string:  http://MYWEBSITE/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade

I'm clearly going to have to start this over.  But I would ask both of you to review the upgrade instructions in the wiki and see if you think they're justified.  These instructions (steps 6-8) concern me:

  1. Configure IIS for a new website with a host header for upgrade.dnndocs.net

  2. Setup Permissions on the file system

  3. Restore the database to a NEW database name.

If these are really required, it may be impossible for me to upgrade my production site, because I'm on a shared Windows site and I don't have access to the IIS config the way I do on my laptop.  I'm also not absolutely sure my DNN4Less hosting license allows more than one DNN database (we have the lowest level license, I'll have to check that).  And while the new database and new host header are clearly a very cautious approach, in the real world I've never been able to be that cautious and so far all my upgrades have worked even though I just replaced everything on the current site and then ran the wizard.

Hedera,

I never changed the autouprade option when copying a DNN installation from production to testing environment. I don't think this is really necessary.

If you use a testing environment, just unzip the files over the existing ones, this reduces the risk that anything goes wrong with file permissions.

Since DNN 6, you have to provide the name and password of the host user before you start the upgrade process - even if you have your persistent cookie set to 100 years and should normally be logged in automatically. I never saw a possibility to turn this off (and I was never searching for one as I thought that this is a good security feature).

I would not do these 3 steps mentioned at the end, but make a backup of the database and files before unzipping the upgrade package.

Best wishes
Michael
