I have been getting this error trying to upgrade from 8.0.0 ever since the first upgrade to 8 came out. I had given up but decided to try again last night going from 8.0.0 to 9.1.0.367 - I still have the same problem. After unzipping everything (and I also tried copying each directory via ftp last night) it never gets to the upgrade script - I just get Error 500.

Since I don't have a "local" installation, only the live site on a remote Arvixe server, this is very hard to debug! I think the only thing I can do is install DNN locally, retrieve the backup zip file and unpack it locally, go through the process of redirecting the database and then see what happens.

Thank you DNNMonster - that looks really promising, and would explain why it's been failing for me for so long. I'm getting paranoid about taking the live site down so often, as I imagine all these hundreds of visitors (which we probably don't have) getting frustrated! SO I'm making the effort to reproduce it locally, which I should have done ages ago anyway.

I have now finally got a new DNN 9 installation running locally, so this evening I will get a DNN 8 version running side by side, overwrite it with my copy of the remote site, restore my current v8 database and rerun the upgrade locally. I'm also trying to understand a problem which has just started happening with a MailChimp module, and doing everything remotely on the one and only copy of the live site is becoming too stressful!

Thanks again. I will be back with an update.

OK here is the final story.

I installed the latest version of DNN 9 locally - no problem. I installed a new version 8.0.0 locally - no problem. I then restored the zip file of my 8.0.0 live site along with its database - it all runs fine. Then I unzipped the 9.1.0.367 upgrade zip file over my restored 8.0.0 website. On browsing to it afterwards (on the server) I immediately receive this message, before it attempts to go through the upgrade process

"Could not load file or assembly 'Newtonsoft.Json' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference"

This has been happening (or at least *something* has been happening, I assume it's this) since the first upgrade to 8.0.0 was released.

Am I really the only one who hasn't been able to upgrade? Has the relevant Newstonsoft dll been left out of all the subsequent distributions?

Any suggestions?!

Thanks for any help.

Ade

PS - I just replaced the Newtonsoft.json.dll in the /bin directory of my local "upgrading" site with the one from the v9 scratch installation. I browsed to the site and the upgrade ran and completed!

So, either the upgrade zip file doesn't include the correct Newtonsoft.json.dll (and hasn't since the first upgrade to 8.0), or it is not replacing the existing one when the extraction takes place. That's taken me the best part of a year to work out!

Now I notice a different problem which is just slightly frustrating... the local website starts up fine, but immediately redirects to the online version. Is there any way to overcome this?

Ade
