Bill, looks like we're both right ;).  Found this in the GroupViewParser.cs

bool membershipPending = false;
bool isOwner = false;
UserRoleInfo userRoleInfo = null;
if (HttpContext.Current.Request.IsAuthenticated)

{
userRoleInfo = CurrentUser.Social.Roles.FirstOrDefault(r => r.RoleID == RoleInfo.RoleID);
if (userRoleInfo != null)
{
isOwner = userRoleInfo.IsOwner;
if (userRoleInfo.Status == RoleStatus.Pending)
{
membershipPending = true;
}
}
if (RoleInfo.CreatedByUserID == CurrentUser.UserID)
{
isOwner = true;
}
}

Steven,

Your question gave me a good excuse to look deeper into the how group ownership is handled in the core . . .

The edit group button's visibility is set in the ParseView method of the group module's Components\GroupViewParser.cs source code file. There is a double test for ownership - first on the IsOwner property of the group/user's UserRoleInfo object if the user is already a member of the group and then on the CreatedByUserID property of the group's RoleInfo object.

In the group module's Create.ascx.cs, both the new role's CreatedByUserID property and the IsOwner flag of the added user role are getting set appropriately.

You might be interested to know that I have extended my popular Forge project, ContentDejour, to allow it's placement on a the group activity page allowing it's selection of content to also be based on the groupid querystring parameter. Hopefully I'll finish testing the packaging and have it up on CodePlex tomorrow.
