The real issue is that the control is badly put together - its something that is functional when called from inside the user profile module - because its dynamically instantiated in code - but if you try to use it any other ways there are lots of things that can go wrong.

There were some issues on the old tracker that talked out those issues but they dont seem to have ever been dealt with or made the leap to the new support tracker maybe.

We have it working in some of our custom controls as a user folder file picker - but to be honest for most of our newer modules we have wound up rolling our own picker utilizing the dnn async uploader control - that is basically a wrapper around the telerik async uploader - it works well for us since we are now uploading most external files to azure storage.
