I recently upgraded my DNN installation to 7.2.2

I was attempting to create a new module by accessing the Host/Extensions page and clicking the "Create New Module" button. I filled out all the information and upon submitting it I get the following error:

There was an error importing the module control, please see the event log for further details

The control was created and the Extension is listed on the page. I went into the extension and added a Module Definition. However, when I attempt to add the control to the definition it appears to try and open a modal popup from within a modal popup and all I get is a darkened screen with no ability to do anything.

This worked fine prior to the upgrade to 7.2.2

I believe it's a known error that is scheduled for a fix in 7.3.0 - I would recommend you create a new page and add a copy of the "module creator" module which has a similar (but more powerful) interface and works as expected.

Unfortunately, when I tried this I got the following error:

When I then go into Host>Extensions I see that it did create the module, but the same issue exists with the missing module definition.

What's worse is I just tried to install an extension that I downloaded a trial for and got the same error, stopping the install wizard.

please make sure, there are roles -1, -2 and -3 in your Roles table.
any other module permission with a role specified need the role to be existing.
