I had the same discussion with a recent client. We decided to go with web forms as there wasn't enough documentation to convince us that MVC would be a good user experience. I would also like to hear more about whether MVC in custom modules is a good idea at this juncture. My advice - stick with the tried and true until convinced otherwise.

That's actually the same conclusion we came to when the last project started about 2 years ago. MVC felt like a nightmare waiting to happen (in DNN) and Angular etc felt to immature. To bad support for Web Forms in Visual Studio these day is abysmal.

There's also the WebAPi/Javascript modules route other than WebForms or MVC. I just posted a post and wondered if there are any open source modules out there that are pure Javascript based.

I think I would stay away from MVC in DNN. It looks like it's a hack and it's not fully supported. I had a lot of issues using partial views when I tried it a couple years ago. I would say JS modules are future proof. Even if DNN ever goes to ASP.NET Core.

Yes, this is something I agree with. The future is something like Angular or React I think. Which is kind of ironic as I am old enough to remember both when the fat client was king...and when it wasn't anymore :)
