Providing direct links to recent posts in specific sub forums is a vital part of my site structure; not just from the homepage, but from many individual pages that have content that is to be discussed in the forum.

I've been messing with the core Newsfeeds module and Bring2Mind's RSSXtra in order to create a Latest Posts module for the forum. (I've touched on this in a previous thread but am bringing it up again since the new forum build is out.

There are two main issues:

1. It will only give me the description from the first post to a recent thread - effectively making it only a 'latest threads' module instead of a 'latest posts' one. Is there a way to make the feed return the actual latest post in the most recently updated threads?

2. I can only get the feeds from an individual sub forum, not from the forum as a whole. To display the latest posts on my homepage, this means I'd have to set up multiple copies of the module (12 so far for my forum). I've tried to syndicate the entire forum as someone suggested, but that doesn't seem to return anything much at all so far; just the forum name.

An alternative option I might try is Orizonti's Newfeeds module. This is a commercial module that I am considering buying if it can do these things. Has anyone here used this with the core forums so any success?

Thanks for any assistance.
Rob

If I were to make a lastest posts module, I would start with the code already being used in the What's New.  You will have to adjust for how the forum handles the user setting of What's New to something set at the module level.  This would be flexible.  Honestly, all the code you need even the UI rendering is there.  You could seperate it as its own specific module if you just referenced the forums project from your custom project.  You would probably want to change somethings and perhaps render the UI differently, I am not sure.  What I am saying is the module already does the biz you need, you just need to mimic it and probably change up some data items.  The thing to take into consideration is private forums and proper roles for seeing any forum content (Set at module and/or page level).  I don't currently have the time to do this but could definately give you some guidance.

Hi Chris,

I really appreciate the offer of assistance should I try to develop such a module... and I would certainly take it on if I had the skills, but I'm afraid I don't. I'm just a hack as far as development at that level is concerned. Thats why you'll see me constantly trying to bend existing items into shape rather then developing new ones.

I've been working on the issue as best I can for some time because it's the only way to avoid having comments functionality on every content page. I feel a forum should be taking on that function; but then one still has to lead users to the right place in the forum in an intuitive manner.

I do like the way one can have just one group of your forum displayed on another page. That's quite unique and goes some way towards filling the requirement, but is just a bit too much and too big to have on every page... and of course, doesn't take one straight to a thread either.

I've brought these issues up in the RSS Newsfeeds project group and also sent posts to both Orizonti/Nukenews and Activeforums to get their take on it as they both have RSS modules, but neither appear to offer the full functionality that other non-DNN forums have in this area.

Let's see if anyone else has got a solution and I'll also report back what I hear elsewhere.

Best regards,
Rob

for the record, this is the other thread you are talking about: http://dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsProjects/tabid/795/mid/2108/threadid/10259/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I've had a mild success just turning on syndication for the module (in the module settings), and then just call the core rss feed from the forums module, instead of the module's own rss feed.

The only issue i have is that i only get just very recent posts this way. Which is good i suppose (to keep down unnecessary trafic), however, that would mean i would need an rss feed module with a memory...

cheers,

erik

I use the Orizonti's Newfeeds module for the BBC news on my site.  I think you could use it to do what you wanted.  I will only parse the RSS feed it's given and it will update on your schedule.  You can choose how many of the articles to keep from the feed recieved.  So in your case you could choose to just keep the last one.  Another good thing with this module is you can skin it to fit in with the page you are on.
