Hi all DNN Pro's

Have to deliver a forum installation this week but hesitate on to use the existing forum module downoad or waiting on the one that is comming to be released. Is ti relatively easy to upgrade from the existing one or will the new release be quite different ?

From all that has been written about the upcoming forum, it will be quite different:

In staging the upgrade, it has become apparent that a fair amount of re-configuration is required in order to be retain the functionalilty of the previous version (e.g forum visibility / permissions). We are taking time to fully evaluate this impact in our own staging environment.

Just an observation: when it is released- it will be it's first public release, i.e. just out of beta.

I definately understand the dev side... these things do take time.

But, the teaser on the project is designed to get people excited.  I'm surprised there's not a lot more people posting anxiously...  We've really got a very patient group here.  I check in, see no progress, and think "well, maybe he's on vacation.. can't blame him". ;)

It'd be nice, after a teaser like that to hear that at least work is getting done on it on a daily or weekly basis.  At least that progress is being made.

Frankly, I wouldn't have put the teaser up until it was available (or on the dotnetnuke.com live site), because I know how impatient I and others can get...

Thanks for all the hard work, and I'll be as patient as I can!

What you say makes sense, but no one really thought it was going to take this long to pass inspection - really.  I think it's because this module is heavilly relied upon by DNN itself that has caused the massive delays.  Some of the issues would not even be considered if it were just for community consumption - but because of the impact on a core portion of this site and the dog-fooding processes undertaken here - they have had significant impact.

Perhaps with this experience the review process could entertain a progress report... in fact it might even already exist.  I think I've seen a few links to this...

Thank you-for pointing this out - although this is not entirely accurate.  First of all, the forum module has been running on the beta-site for some time - and with more testers than any module in past history.  Secondly, the core testers are running this code on their own sites many of which are public... Yes, they are low-traffic sites, but it provides us with a wide-range of environments.

Finally, this is one reason why the module will be implemented on the DNN site first.

I hardly think this is going to be a first-beta release...

Rob/Chris:

Thank you for talking the time to answer the questions, and help the community.

Is there any progress on Scott's comments about a strategy on getting the new forum deployed onto DNN?  Maybe this is a case where the Dog fooding step should be skipped due to the customizations done to the DNN.Com site.
