We have no intentions of adding anonymous/unauthenticated at this time.

Bummer. Any reason why?

Thanks Chris,

There are a few reasons why.  The first one is the module would require an extensive overhaul to make this happen.  THere would be only one 'easy' way to make it happen and it would have some major implications as well.

The other major reason behind this is the 80/20 rule.  When deciding what to roadmap you have to think about who will benefit from an enhancment/addition.  When it is only 20% of your user base or less, this is a harder sell because we have very limited resources.  Not only that, if it is benefiting only a very low number you have to think about the implications it is going to have on the majority of users as well.  This includes performance hits, usability, and just general confusion.  Plus its another thing we would have to document.

To be honest, I never understood the reason to have anonymous forums.  If I was looking for something like craigslist, I would not use this module and would probably use something from scratch that maybe had pieces of this module or the blog in it.  In addition to this, I can't really think of any sites I know of that offer forums where you can post anonymously, which should also be taken into consideration because it does have some value.

Chris,

Thanks for the explanation. I agree it fits the 80/20 rule. I have had user ask this before as a request, so thought I would pass it on. To them, they do not want non members to have logins and want everyone to be able to make forum posts. The reasoning they have in this is they want feedback even if the person does not want to be known to who they are.

Oh well, They will need to purchase ActiveForums or something else to fit their needs.

Thanks for the explanation!

Dave

An option would be to have a "post anonymously" checkbox on the post itself.

This would mean the person has to be logged in and the admin etc can see who posted it (as with the current module) but the name is not displayed on the post/thread.

I personally dont like anonymous postings but there are occasions where the forum is the ideal module but people dont want their name to be displayed for various reasons (the module could be used within an intranet and people are posting some form of suggestionbox where it is anonymous).

This would still fit in with the DNN way of posting/editing etc the only change (i know it isnt minor) is to not display the name next to the post.  It can still be traced if necessary as the admin sees these extras.

Thanks
Mark
