It makes it really annoying to use the forum, I get a Critical Error for almost everything I do now.

I would advise against using the most current version of the Forums Module until a stabilization release has been made available.  In my opinion, there are simply too many show stopping bugs in it.  The previous version worked fine.  It is just missing some extra (in many cases, needed) features.  If your car club has a problem with the previous version, you could let them know that the forums module will be upgraded soon, and it should have the features that they want then.
