I struck the exact same problem tonight. I'm using DNN Community version 05.01.04 (3). 

In the Forum Manager I edited the properties of a forum and unticked the "Forum is enabled" tickbox and clicked "Update". The forum item immediately disappeared from the manager and the viewing area.

Now I can't enable it again because it just doesn't appear in the Forum Manager. At the time I was trying to make the forum read-only and thought this might do the trick but now no one can see the forum at all. I am desperate to enable it again as the forum is live.

I jumped into SQL before and found the table "Forum_Forums" where I found the forum (Id=12). The field IsActive=False so I edited the row to set IsActive=True which I thought would solve the problem but it still does not show in the live forum or in the Forum Manager.

Please help :)

 I solved the problem after trying all kinds of things. Surely it's a bug that disabled forums don't appear in the forum manager but anyway I retrieved it like this:

Luckily I had another forum under the same heading and when I clicked the "up" arrow beside the visible one - to change the display order, the hidden forum immediately re-appeared, allowing me to edit its settings again.

What a relief.
