I've done some more testing of this issue on a fresh install of DNN 5.3.1 and the Forum module version 4.5.3.

I created a new forum and set it up to be a "Normal Forum" and "Public Moderated". Everything was working fine until I changed the forum type to "Notification Forum", saved my changes, posted a few new threads, then changed the type back to a "Normal Forum". Following that all new posts or replies are sending multiple emails (around 10 to 15 emails for each one posting) to my admin user with raw HTMl in the body of the email!

Please, can someone help with this issue? My admins are hopping mad about all the emails filling their inboxes.

Due to the length of time that it takes for these emails to arrive, my prior post was inaccurate. The admin did receive a ton of duplicate emails even from the first postings on the forum. Since they took so long to arrive I assumed they were not being produced. Drat! There appears no rhyme or reason behind this issue.

I think I finally found a solution. Under Email Settings, if I check "Enable Email Queue", then I seem to not get all the multiple emails, and the emails that are coming through are not the raw HTML source, but foratted correctly.

So, the question now is: Why is it necessary to now use the Email Queue? To the two different methods call a different email module and thus the bug in one and not the other?

Anyway, glad I found a work-around.

When adding the new messaging provider with a queue, some old code was removed.

Thanks Sebatian. Do you know if this has been fixed in version 5.4.1?
