I'm looking to install a forum module.  From what I can tell, the best two are this one and one offered by Active Modules (http://www.activemodules.com/).  The latter costs $50 and seems to have the same features as this one with the exception of private messaging, and that feature is soon to be included in this forum.

So I thought I would put the question out there: do you like this forum module?  Have you ever tried a different one, and if so, was it better or worse?

Rob,

I am going attempt to give you what I think the most honest explanation I can offer. I am trying to do this with minimal bias.

I like this forum, obviously, and I think it has the most potential. To this point I have been plugging holes in terms of just getting it running, fixing major bugs, adding major missing features. This process has been roughly 18 months and, for the most part, it has been only myself and Tam in the beginning. I honestly feel that hands down this follows the core methods more than any other forum module available for DNN. While this may not seem too important, I feel this offers tighter integration and all of you will start seeing the benefits of this methodology very soon. The way things are going, I think within 6-12 months this won't even be a question posted anymore.

On the other side of this, depending on your needs this may not be your best option. If I have a client who depends on a forum module, I know I can handle this as I am always going to be working on the module anyways and know the code extremely well. Not many others are going to have this as an option. If you don't have time to understand the module or work through any issues you are going to encounter, then maybe a paid for support included option is what is best for you. I, on the other hand, cannot offer the support options personally that some desire or actually need.

I had to make this choice 1 1/2 years ago and I am very happy I choosed Active Forums. Support is great and it outperformance the Core forum in many ways. Last week I had a look at the last build of the Core Forum and compared both but I will stick with Active Forums. I have heard version 4.0 will be released in September with a long list of new features.

If you are looking for a free one, I am pretty sure this is the best option.
