That is the way the module was designed to work, using the Module Edit Permissions for the basis for posting.  We use the  module to break this down further.

So, the proper configuration is to:

1. Set the Module Setting to grant Registered Users Edit permissiosn on the module.

2. In the Forum General Settings assign Registered Users to the Authorized Edit Roles.

 

Is step 2 necessary? in the Getting Start document it says:

Adding Authorized and Edit Roles Sections

... If they want to post in it, you either leave the Authorized edit roles as Not Specified or you add them to the authorized edit roles using the same procedure but for that section....

 

I thought I did not have to set the Authorized Edit Roles (I could leave it as Not Specified). But this did not seem to work for me.

Step two is not always necessary.  It depends on how exactly you configure the forum.  I covered this properly in the documenation.  I did the documenation based on the current released version and actually did every single step as I wrote the document.  The document is completely accurate although it may be missing a few items.
