Now I am confused.

FindControl does function at the early stage, for that is what the callback does.  However, I think you may be saying that in your scenerio your control is not found on the page during the init.  If that is the case then you will need to wait until I add another option to the callback architecture that allows for the entire page to be processed.

I am not sure what you are asking about the object "this".  If you are referring to the value you are using for the context which gets kept on the client, then the answer is yes, you can put any value you want here.  Keep in mind this value is only seen/used on the client.

It seems like you are questioning the error dialog and why it has drpFilesSearchIn in the message.  If that is the case, I would guess it is because in your errorFunc you have formatted the message with it.

You are absolutely right. The ID of "drpFilesSearchIn" is added to the message.
However this doesn't explain, why a control (whichever) couldn't be found and why the manual setting of references helps.

Still puzzled, but glad to be able to continue ;-)

I have seen this sometimes where apps load all the controls in the init, not sure why the user didnt knwo that they should load automatically.  I think that somehow something gets messed up and stops this from happening.  I would bet that if you drop a new control on the form and use it to replace the old one that wasnt being loaded, that it would work.  Just a quess of course.
