Someone should put together a quick guide for doing this in DNN 6.  Or previous versions for that matter.  I am a little confused as to what the best mix is between DNN built in localization, 3rd party content localization and 3rd party menu/tab localization.  It seems like you'd want to have localization enabled in DNN, but use a language neutral page, with menu/tab and content localization modules so that you don't have to manage separate pages for each language?  What is the best approach?  Pros / cons?  And if take the approach mentioned, how do you have menus/tabs/pages show up only for specific languages?

I am talking about purely customer facing pages here, I understand how localization works with the UI.

Can anyone help?

I totally agree on this.

We started building bilingual websites (French and English) with DNN some 4 years ago. (acomba.com, gfisolutions.com, portailpme.com)

We found info here and there, but no definitive "how to" guide.
Our method ended up being a mix of Apollo Page Localization, MLHTML, the dnnText skin object with fr-CA and en-US resx files, and homemade modules for news and announcements. But it wasn't perfect. We could not create a page visible only in one language, we had MANY language problems with aspdnnstorefront, had to uninstall, problems with the search modules that would return results in both languages, etc.

Localization in DNN 5.6 seemed promising so the latest website we started building was with the new method: enable content localization, have a separate page for each language and stop using MLHTML.

But now I'm not so sure.
Support seems to be buggy, localization in dnnText is not working anymore (or we haven't found how to make it work yet), comments I'm reading from other users (like Ulrik here), and lack of reliable documentation make we want to go back and continue waiting.

Core solution for localized pages might be preferred, if you want to merge more or less independent sites per language, but if you want the same structure in all languages, modules supporting multilanguage natively are required. btw: Solutions like Apollo Page Localization or Locopon DSLocalizator do support suppressing languages or modules per language.

I think that the core feature included in the DNN 5.x versions isn't enough mature and it contains some bugs. I don't know if it's better on DNN 6.
I've often used DSLocaizator which is a very good solution to translate tabs attributes and modules attributes. Moreover, it allows you to set visibility for each tab and each module in each language. Consequently, you could mix separate pages in one language and common pages for several languages by hiding some translated modules for some languages.
The problem is that modules generally don't support the content localization. Then, you have to duplicate them for each language.
See our website www.aricie.com which uses DSLocalizator and our module ModuleWorkflow to manage translated contents and publishing moderation.
Before I've used MLHTML and MLAnnoucements by Apollo and they've done a part of the job.

Thank you for you feedback Sebastian and Stéphane.

I have been trying to get up to date by absorbing lots of info from the "language and Internationalization" forum, I found lots of it in the "Localization DNN and the future" thread. Great info from many big names such as Sebastian.

These all made me want to give DSLocalizator a chance. I've installed version 3.0.5 of this module in my 5.6.2 DNN. Install went fine. But I get an error when I place the DSTabLocalizator module on a page.

Is there something basic I'm missing ? Here is the error:

Error: Localization is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The stored procedure 'dbo.Delisoft_TabLocalization_OptionsGet' doesn't exist. ---> System.InvalidOperationException: The stored procedure 'dbo.Delisoft_TabLocalization_OptionsGet' doesn't exist. at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.DeriveParameters() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters(SqlCommand command) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.DiscoverSpParameterSet(SqlConnection connection, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter, Object[] parameterValues) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.GetSpParameterSetInternal(SqlConnection connection, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelperParameterCache.GetSpParameterSet(String connectionString, String spName, Boolean includeReturnValueParameter) at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelper.ExecuteReader(String connectionString, String spName, Object[] parameterValues) at Delisoft.DNN.Modules.DSLocalizator.Data.SqlDataProvider.GetTabLocalization_Options(Int32 portalId) at Delisoft.DNN.Modules.DSLocalizator.Business.TabLocalization_OptionsController.Get(Int32 portalId) at Delisoft.DNN.Modules.DSLocalizator.UI.DSTabLocalizator.LoadDetectionBehaviorSettings() at Delisoft.DNN.Modules.DSLocalizator.UI.DSTabLocalizator.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I'm trying to find some answers on Locopon's Forums, but I keep getting timeout errors.
Any pointer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bernard
