The app_Data folder would only be a concern if you are using SQL Express, if you aren't there isn't anything to worry about.

Also with it being empty you are safe. I imagine the package just has all folders even if there aren't any files to be upgraded in those folders.

It's not quite empty, there's this App_Data\RadSpell subfolder with en-US.tdf file, which i don't know what is it. Sould I overwrite it on the upgrade?

Yes, i'm using SQL Express 2005 on my localhost and SQL Server 2008 on my hosting provider. I want to update both versions and export from my localhost the full portal and import it into my hosting provider. I hope after the update i won't have problems with the Localization content import.

How does it matter the version of the SQL for the database? I know the problem with attaching the database to SSMS when it's Express version.

*I've made backup of the database the following steps: copy mdf+ldf file, make full backup to bak, delete mdf and ldf file from the copy location.

RadSpell contains spelling dictionaries for the Rad Editor, you may overwrite w/o issues.
all DNN content is stored in database.mdf, if you are using default connection string, however this prevents you from accessing it using other tools, therefore I prefer using attached databases and "full" connection string even with SQL server express.
Note: if you modify Darknight Skin, duplicate the folder and modify your personal copy in your custom folder, which will not get overwritten.
You should stand away from editing default.css (override the css definition in your skin.css) and use portal.css in portals home directory for adjustments per website only.

Yes, i know it a good practise to duplicate the folder and use it as it is a different skin because i made changes to ascx files too. I also plan to override css changes. I would do that later. I just want to complete with my most important tasks - which are to update and successfully able to export from localhost and import in internet a localized content portal.

The problem is that i didn't expect on the upgrade to have: "App_Data" folder and Portals/_default folder changes about the upgrade. And i don't know which files to use in the upgrade and which not to use in these folders. OK, for "App_Data" i shall copy overwrite "RadShell" folder but for "Portals/_default" i'm not sure what to do at the moment. Should i understand that you advise me to use all the contents from the *Upgrade.zip package for "Portals/_default" abd then to apply my changes?
