This is a function of the host user. So you will need to login as "host".

Download the language pack you're interested in from the Language page on DotNetNuke.com and same the file on your disk.

Login as host and go to Host -> Languages

You will see an option named "Upload language pack". Click the click

Now you have to find the file you saved in you disk previously and add the file to the server using the provided control.

Once you're finished click the "Upload" button and you will see the log of the procedure. If no error is shown you should have now a new language active on your site. Navigate again to the Host -> Languages pages and you will see the current list of available languages.

Now you can assign the new language to the portal, and any user can use it as their default language.

Addition:

In many cases, the istall log will show errors about missing folders "/DesktopModules/..." This indicates, that there are translations in the language pack for modules, that are not installed, so don't worry.

On the other hand, there maybe modules not included in the language pack. Use the resource verifier to be found in host:languages, to check, which files are missing or are for another version. Due to the fact, that the resource files do not have version numers, the resource verifier checks for missing or redundant keys and compare file dates. Missing or redundant keys may indicate, that the translation is for another version, but there is no check, if  text items changes are reflected by the translation.

You can alter the translation (e.g. for an outdated module translation) using the language editor to be found in host:languages. This affects the whole installation.

To customize localization for a single portal, use the language editor in administration:languages. You should at least adopt "Terms of Use" and "Privacy Statement", that are found together with all mail templates in file GlobalResources.

Here is something that I think that we need to change. There should be one function to upload a core language pack, and another to upload a module language pack, as well as their counterparts to create the language packs for core and for each module.

just my 2 cents

I agree with the option to select the content of a language pack:

  • core framework translation
  • module translation
  • skin object translation
  • provider translation
  • whole installation

The language pack shall contain version information about each component and a version checker shall rum before import to compare with installed versions, issuing warnings, if they don't match, so the host can select, what to import in the interactive installation and using parameters for batch installation (don't compare version, only same main release, match exactly e.g.). This would be much easier to handle, for we will not have to export dozens of install packs for hosts with prepacked installations.
