I was having the same problem, this is what I have found...

DNN -> add role name without the domain prefix.
AD -> user account must be in the Security Group - Domain Local that matches the name in DNN.

Looking forward to the update for the recursive lookup to the security group!

I'm not sure of the state of the AD module in terms of a project lead - there seems not to be one. Without one, no new functionality or fixes seem to make it into releases. Consequently, outside of the standard distributions, there are fixes for a few bugs. These do work and are definitely worth downloading.

I couldn't find a fix for the nested membership issue and so had to code my own. If you like, I can supply the changes necessary. Let me know if you are interested in being a second test site.
