- Windows server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (SP 2)
- IIS 6.0
- Same behaviour with and without impersonation enabled in the web.config.

I think I forgot to tell you, that our webserver is also a Domain Controller in the AD. Also, I have read the thread concerning Windows Server 2008 - can this be a similar issue? I just can't seem to find the file, to which Network Service should be granted permissions..

That file that was referenced is part of IIS7 I believe so you won't find it on Server 2003. However, you could check the WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files directory and make sure that NETWORK SERVICE has the correct permissions on there. I'm not sure if things might get screwed up because the webserver is also a DC. I haven't tried running a DC as a webserver since Windows 2000 Server where I ran into no end of problems.

Once again thanks a lot for your patience. I checked the permissions, and they seem fine. I also did the aspnet_regiis.exe -ga "Network Service"- thing and the aspnet_regiis.exe -i  -thing, just to make sure.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I have also the .NET Framework 3.5 installed on the server.

It is strange though: Even though Network Service appears as having the right permissions, I cannot find it using the standard Add-button from the Security-tab. It simply does not show..? I have been doing some searching, and it seems to be because of the fact that the server is also a DC. But howcome I can still choose it in the Identity tab in IIS, and that it shows up as having permissions in all the right places..? Anyone seen this before? It has the permissions - I just can't add it anymore..?
