Yes it is but you should be redirected to the homepage once it's logged you in.

So, to understand this correctly... for auto login to work....I must navigate users to http://sitename/desktopModules/authenticationservices...  ???

Accepted Answer 
No the provider should automatically do the redirect when a user goes to the site. You need the second in the section of your web.config uncommented.

OK....I do have the second section of web.config uncommented and still no auto-login. If I go straight to the windowssignin.aspx I get autologged in and then redirected to the home page. Ive given all the proper permissions, commented and uncommented web.config, running classic pipeline. Not sure what I'm missing?? I'm running windows 2008 r2 w/ IIS 7.5. I could route traffic to the windowssignin.aspx, but was hoping to just go to the site home.

Are you leaving any kind of time frame between your changes and trying to go to the site? Try this.... clear your cache and cookies on your computer and then try going to your website. Does it log you in then?
