Did you make the changes under a different user?  I ran into the problem this way.  I had created the album using a user that was set to Spanish.  Later I made changes to the Gallery with a different user that was set to English.  So probably every time you make changes it rewrites the XML file based on the user who is editing it at the time.

Well - that is an interesting question.  Frankly I don't know.  I do have more than one account in the site that can make those kind of changes, so I could have done that.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I prefer it to 'A passing alpha particle!' - which was basically all I had before.
