Thanks Matthias.  I'll give it a shot.

And, regarding updating on my own.. I wish I had the time to learn how to do this right now.  Maybe next year! :)

Remember that using in production sites is not supported until 4.3 becomes a gold release. So try testing in your own test environment, not on a live one.

To upgrade DNN you need ftpp access, and its very simply since DNN 4.6.2 !  Upload all files without the web.config from the DNN package to your hosting via FTP.  But before do this it is recommanded to backup the database and the existing files.

After uploading the new DNN files run your page.

Ok, I changed the manifest and installed.  When I add it to a page I get the following:

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\dnn\0afaea0a\862713e3\App_Web_controlgallerymenu.ascx.fb226019.taheqsi2.0.vb(54): error BC32206: Indirect reference is being made to assembly DotNetNuke version 4.8.4.2, which contains 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Gallery.WebControls.GalleryMenu'. This Project references a prior version of DotNetNuke version 4.8.0.0. To use 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Gallery.WebControls.GalleryMenu', you must replace the reference to DotNetNuke with version 4.8.4.2 or higher.

I don't know what this is talking about.. assuming it's something in the DLL. I don't expect you to give me support with that error (unless you'd like to ;) )

So, I'm backing up my DB and files right now so I can upgrade to 4.8.4 - I know this is OT, but since you recommended updating, I'll ask here.

For upgrading to 4.8.4, I just want the "DotNetNuke 4.8.4 Upgrade" download and overwrite my current install with that. Is that correct?

Regards,

Brian

Because the Gallery is a WAP module compiled against DNN 4.8.4, it is NOT possible to install this module (even after editing the dnn manifest file) into an earlier version of DNN.

Prior to upgrading to DNN 4.8.4, please try to uninstall the Gallery module using the Host --> Module Definitions screen.

Regarding your question about upgrading, that is correct - you will want to download the DotNetNuke 4.8.4 Upgrade package (which intentionally does not contain a web.config file so as to avoid overwriting your current web.config file). The upgrade package will, however, not include for automatic installation several of the newest core modules. After you have successfully upgraded, you may also wish to download the install versions of these and manually install updates for some or all of the recently released modules.

Prior to performing the DNN upgrade and in addition to backing up your DB and files, I would suggest making an extra backup copy of the current web.config file. For more information on the upgrade procedure, the following blog entry from Mitchel Sellers should be of assistance:
