It's a no brainer.  use windows live writer and metaPost community edition.  this completely eliminates the problem AND frees you from the slavery to which you've been submitting yourself by using the web interface to post your articles.

Unfortunately, that is not a solution though.  There are still folks who either cannot or will not be able to use the WLW solution.  I think there can be some creative ways to make the web UI easier for novice bloggers to use (in terms of the timeouts).

Everyone has covered most of the bases here (and I particular like the idea of a warning when navigating away).  I thought I'd throw out that as a habit whenever I write anything of any length I always ctrl-a ctrl-c and save a copy of it in my clipboard.  I've lost too much text to this sort of thing (and it isn't limited just to the DotNetNuke blog module at all -- this happens everywhere, at least to me).

I use WordPress over on the Berkman HLS blog site, and one of the features that I like is the periodic and automatic saving of draft entries.  In my opinion, this would be an even better way to handle the issue.

Brendan, tonight, after losing the same blog entry TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  F@#$%^!@#$%^@#$%^ING TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm seriously thinking of pitching this DNN thing.  Yes, I'm pissed tonight.  I have one of those MS mice with the buttons to navigate back'n'forth and I've lost my blog twice tonight by accidentally clicking that button! :<  FREAK'n HE-double hockey sticks!!!!!!!  The main reason I went to DNN was for the photo albums, that was a bust (no SWFs for 12,000 is NOT the solution and NO I won't redo my directory structure), but the blog entry was a pleasant surprise!  But after losing too many blogs and having my partner say "hhmmm I heard some swearing down there, you ok?"  I'm starting to reevaluate other more stable tools!  Yes, I said stable, to easily lose a blog entry like that, IS NOT STABLE!

PS  You can bet I'm doing a Ctrl-C here!

Hi Henry,

I am very sorry you lost your work because of an issue with our module. To avoid problems like this we added metaWeblog support to our module, so that you can add all your blog entries using en offline writing tool like Windows Live Writer, or any other tool that supports this API. I strongly suggest you to consider to take advantage of this powerful feature. Also, to make things even more stable I added a "Save as draft" feature to the entry screen in the web interface, that performs a quick save of your work without leaving the page, without publishing your entry. This addition is already in the source code and it has been already tested, we are confident that it will be available in the next version.

Best regards,
Dario Rossa
