Hi all,

I'm trying to hide the container surrounding the forum so that it fits with the look of my site. The normal way of unticking the container box in the module settings only does it for some forum views but not others leading to a doubling up of titles.

So the question is.. how can one force all forum views to not display the container?

hmm... hang on.

I've just realised that certain functionality (My Posts and My Settings) is lost to forum users if the container is not displayed.... because the Solpart menu is gone. I think some labeled buttons would be a far better option because the little Solpart triangle is an example of bad usability anyway.

So... is there a way to retain access to those menu items without having the container displayed?

I realise I can create a container just for the forum module that has no title, but what options are there for the menu... I've noticed previously that some Solpart items such as Edit or Print can be displayed as words. Is this something that can be doen with these other options?

Ideally, there would just be a couple of extra buttons next to the New Thread button.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas,

Rob

Well I've gone and made a container that has not title and only shows the solpart. This is not ideal but I thuoght it would have at least worked.

It doesn't. The forum still uses the module with title etc when one clicks through to my posts and my settings.

Is there any way at all to force the forum to use a specific container for all screens?
(short of making the forums container the default one for the whole site.. that'd be a huge pain)

Thanks for any assistance
Rob

A couple topics to cover here.  First, you should have some type of container simply for the module actions.  As far as I can tell, if there is no container there is no module actions (I feel this is a core issue that should be resolved and not one within the module). It is easy enough to make a no title container with no padding and just have the action menu.  To touch on the usability, you will notice there is a set of rectangular buttons we call the module actions navbar in this module, which handles your usability issue.

The other issue you are facing which makes you wonder why you always see a container somtimes is how skins use edit (or admin) skins and containers based on the module action type.  If the module action type is admin, edit, host it will require the admin container to display.  This again is an area I feel the core should change.  To me it makes more sense to take full advantage of module actions and the security model behind them more so than worrying about the container situation.

Thanks for the response Chris

Just to clarify... when you say "there is a set of rectangular buttons we call the module actions navbar in this module" are you referring to the new version that you're working on or have I missed something in the current one?

Regards
Rob

Rob,

I think Chris is referring to the fact that these forums have a set of buttons to access the "My Posts", "My Settings", etc. features that are located at the top-right of the forum. However, this navbar also only appears to display when the container is shown and they disappear when the container is hidden. My own question, which would seem to follow on from this, is whether there is some way to have the navbar appear even when the container is not shown.
