Well I just noticed that the webresource.axd/ebresource.axd exclusion can't have been applied, because the compressopn.config file didn't seem to have been updated. So I'm giving that a go again with compression uncommented in web.config.

Roger

Keep in mind that when you are changing the Settings for Compression on the Host > Host Settings page that there is a seperate update link just for those settings (like the stylesheet editor on the site settings page).  If you only click on the main Update link, then your changes to the compression settings will be lost.

That is interesting Rob.
Did you check to make sure your pages are really being compressed now?

Hi John,

Well... things are not so good after a night's sleep.

After the rebuild with compression off, I repeatedly switched compression on and off, restarted, cleared cache etc. over about three hours before I posted to the thread and not once did it fail to apply page settings with compression turned on. On my previous build it failed immediately.

However this morning I get up and it no longer works. So I turned compression off again and it's fine.. I hope I didn't send too many people on a goose chase with that one!

Not sure what to do now, but i'll stick with this 441 build as I'm now pretty sure that this will be sorted out in the end.

9 hours later and I am still can's post back on most of my admin/host forms.  So Rob's temp fixes did not work for me.  I'm going to roll back to 4.4.0 and wait for 4.4.2.

BTW - Rob I could not find the issue you mentioned on Gemini.  Neither could I find any pertinent issues when I searched on "WebForm_PostBackOptions".  Do you have the issue #?

Hi Wylie,

I'm afraid the fix ended up failing again after I'd finally gone to bed. Even so, at least we now know it's being looked at so I'll stick with 441 and just leave compression off until it's fixed.

The report in Gemini is not easy to find.. I only found it because my own report was closed and linked to it. Even searching for the exact title "Creating new role group error" doesn't find it. Here it is: http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?p=0&id=4917

I'm going to briefly try DV's settings from his last post and see if that works.

I was afraid that it wouldn't stick.  I had that problem with the blowery compression module on more than one occassion.  I would think I had the right exclusion in, only to find out a couple days later that items could not be added to my online store.  Not fun.

With the old code, it was finally fixed by specifying the exclusion as "ebresource.axd", all lower case and skipping the first "w".  This was because of a bug in the way the path was compared.  That info was all in the Http Compression project forum, but it looks like that forum was removed.  Too bad the knowledge info from that forum wasn't saved.

I recommeded that the core use a Regex comparison in this new compression module like I am doing in PageBlaster, but I guess they decided that was not the way to go.  With Regex you can specify just portions of the Url, or do some really cool things like making it exclude all Urls that do not have "tabid" in the Url unless the Url does not have a querystring at all (home page).

I tried it out again with settings close to Declic's post above (click the thumbnail for mine) and so far it seems to be holding. The main difference from earlier for me is in specifying Deflate compression instead of Gzip. Gzip worked fine on 440 however.

I had the webresource and ebresource still in there from earlier as well.

I've been in and out of the app, restarted several times, uploaded some fresh module builds, and generally been 'at it' and I am still able to change page settings without error.

I'll of course immediately post back here if it fails, but it's been holding fine for a few hours now

Rob
