Hi,

I am currently running 3.2 and figure it is about time I upgrade.  I have no idea how to do this and am desperatly hoping my hosting provider will be of assistance.

As I bought quite a few add on modules I am wondering weather just upgrading would be rather risky and whether I would be better starting with a fresh site so that I can get everything working on the newer version then switch to the site.

If I do this can I import the content and users from my current site to the new site?  Or will I have to just upgrade my live site.

Any not too technical advice on how to do this would be great.

Thanks
Liz

I faced the same problem back in December. I was running a live 3.2 site on a shared server, and was pretty apprehensive about upgrading to version 3.3.7. Sometime in the next month, I plan on upgrading from 3.3.7 to version 4.4.x.
Before I upgraded the live site, I downloaded both a database backup and all the DNN files from the live site. After downloading them, I recreated the live site by restoring the database backup and unzipping the DNN files on my local system. I was careful to keep the machine key settings in the web.config file on my local system, so that after unzipped the DNN files, I was able to replace them in the web.config file.

After you are comfortable doing that, you can test the upgrade on your local system before you try it on your live server. If anything here is too technical, just ask about the parts you're unsure of (for example, I had never been comfortable restoring of a SQL Server database before this).

Chris
