I have a pretty wide table that I want authorised users to input data to.  It is hidden from everyone else.

Is it possible to put the Add New Row action link at the top of the module (if so how) or is it better to put a link to adding a new row from some other page for my data inputters?

And while I am on, is it possible to increase the number of characters in the title, or to give the field a name and also include a longer label (I suppose that is not the same as the control field name) question style piece of text on the page for data input ?

Thanks

"Add new row" is an action, that is integrated into the action menu and - if provided by the container - anywhere, where the appropriate link is positioned in the container. Please refer to the skinning guide, how to create containers.

Current database layout limits the number of characters for field names to 50 Characters, you can increase this by modifying the table UserDefinedFields in the database, all relevant sProcs and sqldataprovider. The field name is automatically used a column header. Using custom XSL Style Sheets you have additional flexibility.
