I am new to DNN and I am currently running v4.3.4. I  have never done an upgrade before and I would like to upgrade to v4.4.1. I am very confused on how to perform an upgrade. Can someone please tell me how to do it? Thanks.

Here are the steps I usually follow for an upgrade :

1. Create backup copies of your db and dnn application
2. Create a App_offline.htm file to announce to users accessing your website that you're currently doing maintenance to your website
3.. Copy the content of the DotNetNuke_4.4.0_Upgrade.zip over your existing dnn installation
4. Rename web.config to web.config.bak
5. Rename release.config to web.config
6. In your new web.config file, change the value of AutoUpgrade to false
7. Copy those following information from your old web.config.bak to your new web.config
    a. ConnectionString
    b. MachineKey (validationKey and decryptionKey)
    c. objectQualifier (if necessary)
    d. If necessary, add c# modules to codeSubDirectories
8. If necessary, add customizations to Default.aspx
9. Make sure 'aspnet' or 'network service' user has necessary access to your dnn installation
10. Rename App_Offline.htm file to App_Offline.htm.bak
11. Start upgrade by accessing the install page - http://yourdomain.xxx/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Install

Thanks Olivier!

I did all of the steps you listed. After doing the 11th step, it took me to the UnderConstruction.aspx page under the Install folder. When I try to go to my site, I get the following error:

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

The stored procedure 'dbo.GetPortalAliasByPortalID' doesn't exist.

What should I do? Thanks.

Make sure your connectionstring in web.config is ok.  Did you leave the comments between the connectionstring for SQL Server?  By default, the web.config will try to point to SqlExpress.

Hey Olivier,

I noticed I missed the connection string in the appSettings section too, so I replaced it in there too. I also deleted all of the comments for the SqlExpress stuff. I also replaced and objectQualifier that I had originally missed in the SqlDataProvider. I ran the install page again in step 11 and I am still getting the underconstruction.aspx page. Also, when I try to go to my site again, it redirects me to the UnderConstruction.aspx page.

What else could I be missing?

Thanks again for your help.

Lara
