Hi!

I am wondering . . . since there are so many (well, four) versions of DNN4, can I have multiple installations in one system . . . such as installing the "Install Version" for running portals and the Starter Kit for quick module developments, all in one machine?

Also can I have both DNN Version 4.0.3 and DNN Version 4.4.1 in the same box?

If the answer to the above questions is yes, then do I need to have the different DNNs work with their own separate SQL databases or can they all share the same database?

Thanks for shedding some insights!

jc

Ha, I asked too soon . . .

I've read from this thread "Which to download for module dev"

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/104016/scope/posts/Default.aspx

and got my answer for the first question. I'll use the Install Version for everything I need to do.

However, I still would like to know whether I can have both DNN Version 4.0.3 and DNN Version 4.4.1 in the same box . . . just for now.

New questions:

* From what I've just read, the Starter Kit installation does not need IIS but uses "Cassini" instead. So does that mean I can use the Starter Kit version on my laptop which is *not* running Win XP Pro (which means no IIS)?

* Shaun Walker had written earlier, in November 2005, that Cassini exhibited erractic behaviors and therefore was not recommended. Is this still the case? Or is it safe to use Cassini instead of IIS now, so that I can be confident about using the Starter Kit on my laptop for module development?

Thanks for all the lights :)

You can have as many different installations and versions of DNN as you want on a machine.  Each will need its own database and virtual directory but otherwise you are all set to go!

In regards to the use of cassini, I find it a bit flaky on projects outside of DNN so I wouldn't reccomend it.  Which version of Windows are you running on your laptop that it doesn't have IIS?

Thanks for your reply, Mitchel.  That's great news regarding multiple installations of DNN on the same box.

My laptop is running Windows XP Media Edition. I only assume that I can't have IIS because I was told that IIS needs Win XP Pro.

My interest with Cassini is only for doing development work with DNN. So I guess it's okay as long as it doesn't flake out on DNN.

Thanks again for your insights!

jc,

I guess I am not 100% sure about Media Center edition, but I have had IIS on both XP Pro and XP Tablet PC edition.

Try going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Components and see if you can add IIS from there.
