I'm afraid I cannot help you with the actual problem you are experiencing right now but I would suggest that if you are considering upgrading that you approach it with great care.  Make sure that you have good backups of both your DNN directory and the SQL Database.

I would also suggest that you recreate your DNN installation on another machine so that you can test the upgrade process (and test your backups).  Since the version you are using is pretty old, your AD integration solution was an add-on.  You need to explore the AD solution that comes with the newer versions of DNN.
