We need to create a primary menu item as a container of sub-menu items.  The primary menu item does not have a link or page associated with it.  It needs to ignore any user clicks.

example:

Products (no link or page)
> Product 1 (link to product page 1)
> Product 2 (link to product page 2)

How do I create an empty menu item such as "Products" above

You'll have to create a (dummy) page associated to "Products" and disable it in the page settings (in page settings > advanced settings, check option "Disabled"). By this the menu item will ignore the user clicks, while its submenu items stay clickable.

As admin, you can still edit this page and its settings in "Admin > Pages".
