Hi Guys ,

Am hoping one of you can save the day and help me correct my boo boo....
After setting up a portal i was in the host skin container settings, chose the ones i wanted(from the list view) then updated it. I then come accross picture view ones and hit the apply button on one of them. Once the browser refreshed my portal Host settings page vanished.
All i get now is the following error:
An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) at DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String TypeName, String CacheKey, Boolean UseCache) at DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String ObjectProviderType, String ObjectProviderName, String ObjectNamespace, String ObjectAssemblyName, Boolean UseCache) at DotNetNuke.Modules.NavigationProvider.NavigationProvider.Instance(String FriendlyName) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.NavObjectBase.InitializeNavControl(Control objParent, String strDefaultProvider) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Controls.TreeViewMenu.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Control.AddedControl(Control control, Int32 index) at System.Web.UI.ControlCollection.Add(Control child) at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.Page_Init(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Page.OnInit(EventArgs e) at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Can someone please tell me how i un do /correct this issue and get the portal back?

Regards

Simone

I have the same problem on several different installs so its some kind of bug. It seems to be related to selecting the predefined blue or grey skins with Vertical Menus (I have not tried custom skins yet). If this is a new install you can delete the contents of the Skins table in the database. This will set DNN back to using the default. Otherwise delete the particular records related to the portal (e.g. portal id 0).

An easier way to reset your skins is by renaming the skin files through ftp, then DNN will revert to the default skin too.
There are some DLL's for the vertical menu missing in the distribution

Thanks - Nina's posts are helpful.

It did take me 5 minutes of staring at the default skin directory thinking "what's she on about - 'Vertical Menu - Fixed Width.ascx' isn't missing, it's right there" . Finally I realised the missing files she was taking about were the supporting DLLs (what you read and what you think you read can be soooo different) and the Vertical Menu ascx files need to deleted and replaced with the Horizontal ones.

Even then in didn't quite work. The site came up but the containers didn't - they had a critical error. I was still logged in as admin. So I logged out. Everything fine. Logged back in as admin. Everything fine.

Personally I reckon it's much easier and quicker to amend the Skins table if your ISP has a SQL interface, but each to their own.

thanks again for the pointer to Nina's site.
