Iwonder,

I've got to apologize, I've got to learn not to post before my first cup of coffee in the morning.

I after your last post I had to go make sure I was right and realized I was almost completely wrong and probably misled puppetj in his quest for a feed reader.

I had been working on a module called News that works like the announcement or articles modules and somehow confused them in my head when I was replying to the first poster.

In light of that your post earlier makes perfect sense to me now as I was way off base.  I hope I didn't scare him or anyone else off working with this module because I didn't check myself.

Once again I apologize for both of my last two posts and thanks for helping clear things up.

No worries here.  It is difficult to keep the various modules straight, and I probably confused some folks with my use of a popular name when referring to the News module as the RSS module.  In fact, when you pull down the list of modules from the Admin tools, the module is called 'News Feeds (RSS)', the folder in the DesktopModules that contains the source code is named 'News', and the source code for it is 'RSSmodule.ascx.vb'.  Now, with other non-core modules being named 'News', it easy to understand the confusion.

So, puppetj, if you are still having issues understanding how to display an RSS news feed on your site, we'll keep watching for posts and try to help.  The basics are pretty simple.

A simple mini-tutorial would be as follows:

Find an RSS URL, and put it into the textbox next to the 'News Feed Source'.  Make sure that the URL radio option is selected.

Next, you can optionally set a translation xsl file to render the feed, or use the default xsl file shipped with DNN, which does render most news feeds with a bare bones RSSv0.91 translation.  Then, update.

If your News Feeds (RSS) module displays the feed as expected, then you've got it working, if you see html rendered or get errors, then there's more work to do either with customizing an xsl file for the feed, or maybe even with permissions on your web site.

There are other twists too, like using the feed to render your own 'handcoded' feeds, or feeds that refer to syndication items from your site.  Also, as said above, there are many types of news feeds available, and not all are simple RSSv0.91 implementations, so it's best to begin by reading up on what RSS is about to get a grasp of how to effectively use news feeds.  The module is great for pulling in content and links from other sites, which updates whenever their content is updated in the feed.  You don't have to save the actual news file to your site because it won't update in that fashion.

Hope we helped more than confused you.

Hi,

I am trying to publish news from this link on http://p.golfpublisher.com/rss/rss091/65.xml?tid=8731 my website. I used both modules XML & RSS, but any of this wont display news.

XML Module says :

System.Security.SecurityException

& RSS : Could Not Connect To http://p.golfpublisher.com/rss/rss091/65.xml?tid=8731. You Should Verify The Source Address Is Valid And That Your Hosting Provider Has Configured Their Proxy Server Settings Correctly.

I am not applying any XSL file , I believe this are already provided by feed. Please help me getting this feed published. Is XSL file must for this ?

I use GoDaddy as hosting & not finding any manual from them.

Please guide.

Thank you,

Regards,

-Sunny.

Well, the feed you reference is an RDF type of feed.  The news feed (RSS) module by default only support v0.91 feeds out of the box.  So, at the very least you would need a custom xsl to transform the feed to display.  Most rss feeds that use the v0.91 and above specs would work with the simple default v0.91 xsl, by displaying common tags, and dismissing the unknown tags.  In the case of RDF, it's a different spec altogether, so the structures different, and not understood without making some adjustments in the xsl. I've got some examples in other posts.  If you follow my posts, you should be able to find at least one example.

There may be other issues with your site, as the error suggests a possilble configuration issue.  Although, this particular error message is not always a descriptor of the real issue.

As I've said many times, the key to making this module work - understand the type of feed you want to use.  Inspect the feed by simply bringing it in to your IE7 for FireFox browser, and view the source.  Near the top of the source is a very important tag that tells what version of an xml/rss file is being sent.  In this case the important information is as follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"
xmlns="http://my.netscape.com/rdf/simple/0.9/">

Thank you, I will follow your posts for more details. In short if you could guide me how to convert RDF feed to normal feed 0.91 I would be much thankful to you. Else how to edit xsl sheet ( in short) it would be great guide. I wil aslo check your other posts. Thank you again for your help

Regards,

-Sunny.
