I'm looking for documentation of a feature I've only just noticed in file manager!

I would like to know exactly the relationship between the below types of folders you can create in file manager, especially as they seem to be "stored" in the same file manager hierarchy? (seems very odd to me right now :). Would also like to know exactly what they are:

a) Standard - File System
b) Secure - File System
c) Secure – Database

I'm guessing:
a) Is standard file system
b) Is encrypted (advantages of this?)
c) is stored on the database.

But how come they are all using the same directory tree?
Would really like to know if there is proper documenation here as well....

Many thanks!

Alex

Alex,

AFAIR, Charles blogged about this feature last summer, when it was introduced in DNN 3.3.0/4.3.0:

  • all folder types are created as file folders inside your /portals/[PortalID] directory
  • getting files using LinkClick.aspx (preferred link type now) checks for read permission for each folder type
  • from an unsecure folder, any users can get the file by typing the url into the browser window and downloading it
  • in a secure folder (File system), the file gets added a special appendix (not shown in file manager and URL control) to be of a file type, that is not delivered by the web server, which means users cannot get it by typing the URL of the file into the address bar of the browser
  • Secure folders (Database) store the files in the database. This should not be used for large files due to performance decrease.

HTH

Thanks Sebastian for the explanation.

What I find interesting is the database folder, it virtually appears to be part of the file system if you look at the tree view of folders. Why, it's completely different isn't it?

I couldn't find it on the blog either (just tried).
I'm going to log an issue in gemini, there should at least be online help on this.

Cheers!

for database stored files, the folder is necessary for temporary storage of the file during upload and used as placeholder to display virtually the files stored in the database.
