Just to validate what I said, I put together a quick version of the niftyVideo template that allows me to play any youtube video, and it worked.

If you wanted to, it would be relatively easy to create a template that would display a video IF you entered a URL for the video, but would not if you left the video URL field blank when uploading. Let me know if that would help you. By using the templating system, you ARE going to be required to have a consistent format for each repository item, but if you're okay with having the videos the same size and appearing in the same place for each item that DOES have an associated video, the template approach would work.

The other option is to modify the Repository source code and remove the line that strips out the scripting from the description, then you would be able to do what you want which is include the <object> tag directly in the description field. That would require that you change the source code and recompile the module.
